More than 2000 exhibits of Nature Museum represent mountain ranges, wide valleys, coniferous and deciduous forests, steppes and lakes of Buryatia. Unique collection shows the diversity of flora and fauna, minerals of Baikal region. You’ll see here rare exhibits such as stuffed Przevalsky’s horse and hooded crane being on record in Red Book.
The museum was opened on July, 12, 1983. The building of the museum was built in 1916 for Town Public Assemblies.
There are 5 halls in the museum. The 1st hall is an introductory informative hall. Common physiographic characteristics of landscapes of Buryatia. The history of scientific research of the territory. The
2nd hall is a hall of natural history. The bones of mammoth 10 000 – 2.5 million years old, rhinoceros and bison. Findings of mammoth are typical of Buryatia. These remains confirm the theory of evolution in the Earth. The
3rd hall is a geological one. You’ll see a map of natural resources (200 deposits of underground resources) proved on the territory of Buryatia. Geologists call Buryatia the Ancient Crown of Asia. Why? Cause so many places of benk Archaean measures are found here; ornamental stones, semi-precious stones, attract a special attention. Nephrite is well known among them, it can be of different tincture of green in Buryatia. The
4th and 5th halls show landscapes of Buryatia, its main ecosystems, its structure and trophic relations in it. The
4th hall is devoted to the anthropogenic influence. Selenginsk amidst the mountains, the most explored southern part of Buryatia, the majority of rare animals inhabiting this territory (bustard, black crane, reindeer and so on), Red Book of Buryatia are displayed in this hall. The
5th hall is a hall of high relief. You can see here how natural zones change depending on altitude: you’ll see the diversity of such zones in Buryatia, varying from steppe (or prairie) to tundra (or cold desert). The Eastern Sayany is the highest-altitude district of Buryatia. The highest mountain of Eastern Siberia, Munku Sardik (3491 meters high) is located there. Voiced diorama will bring you to the highland easily. Red deer, sable, eared seal are displayed here. You can find here information about 5 specially protected territories of Buryatia, they are 3 reservations and 2 national parks. The oldest reservation of Russia is Barguzin Reservation. It was established in 1916 to protect and reproduce the Barguzin Sable.
